Gemini Spark is Google’s background agent for your own Google account. It runs on a schedule rather than waiting for a prompt, it plugs into Gmail, Calendar and Drive, and Google is blunt about the supervision it still needs: “Supervise closely, interrupt when needed.”Google, Gemini Spark, read at source 16 Sep 2026. The page carries no launch date; Google’s What’s new for Gemini Spark page, read in a browser 22 Sep 2026, does: “May 19, 2026 — Initial launch: Gemini Spark starts rolling out with Schedules and Skills in the United States.”
- It works when you are not there. Google: it “works in the background 24/7, even if your phone and laptop are turned off”.
- Three moving parts: Tasks, Skills and Schedules.
- Google-app connections are off until you turn them on — Gmail, Calendar, Drive, Docs, Sheets, Slides, YouTube and Maps. Third-party apps and your own MCP servers can be connected too.
- It is not free and not everywhere. Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers, 18 or over, on a personal Google Account, and not in the European Economic Area, Nigeria, Switzerland or the UK.

What does it actually do?
It takes an instruction that has a time in it. Google’s own examples are schedules and pipelines rather than questions — one reads: “Every Monday at 9:00 AM, scan my inbox and review my emails from the past week. Give me a quick recap of the most important updates and provide a suggested, prioritized to-do list for this week.”
Another teaches it a habit: “Read through the last 50 emails that I wrote and turn it into a style guide for how I write emails. Turn that into a skill that gets called every time I ask you to draft emails for me.”
That is the difference Google is drawing: “While standard chatbots wait for a prompt, Gemini Spark can take proactive action on your behalf, under your direction.”
The unit of work is not a question. It is a standing instruction with a trigger — which is also why the review burden is different from a chatbot’s.

Google, Gemini Spark, read at source 16 Sep 2026: “As you build Skills, you define exactly how you want Spark to take actions on things you do often, tailoring your experience and saving you from repetitive prompting.” And: “Schedules allow you to automate your workload on your own terms by setting up time-based or conditional triggers to execute tasks exactly when you need them.” Until 22 Sep 2026 the Schedules row said “time-based automation you set”, which left out the conditional triggers the same page describes.
What it can reach
Google names the apps and the default: Spark “can connect natively with your favorite Google apps like Gmail, Calendar, Drive, Docs, Sheets, Slides, YouTube, and Google Maps”, and “These connections are turned off by default, just head to your settings to turn them on.”
Google’s own apps are not the only ones. Google’s changelog lists third-party Connected Apps (Canva, Instacart and OpenTable rolling out from 1 July 2026, Dropbox and Zillow from 7 July) and, from 29 June 2026, custom ones: “Connect your personal or third-party apps to Gemini Spark with their Model Context Protocol (MCP) server URLs.”Google, What’s new for Gemini Spark, read in a browser 22 Sep 2026. First-hand: until 22 Sep 2026 this section named only Google’s own apps.
On the obvious worry — whether it reads everything — Google’s answer is a no with a qualifier: “Although it is an autonomous AI agent running in the background, it does not read your emails indiscriminately. It works under your direction to help you with email management.”
That is a claim about intent, not a technical limit. Google describes the scoping in the same sentence that describes the capability, and this page has not tested where the line falls.
Who can use it
Not everyone. Google: Spark is “currently available for Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers over 18 in select countries as well as select business users”, and it says it is “rapidly expanding access to more users and businesses over the coming weeks”.
Google’s help page is more specific. You must “Sign in to the Gemini app with a personal Google Account. For now, this feature isn’t available if you sign in with a work or school Google Account.” On where: “Available wherever Gemini Apps are supported, except in the European Economic Area, Nigeria, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom.” You can have “up to 15 tasks running at a given time”, and Google calls Spark “an experimental feature in early development”.Google, Use Gemini Spark to manage your tasks & workflows in Gemini Apps, read in a browser 22 Sep 2026.
The two pages do not quite line up: the product page mentions “select business users”, while the help page rules out work and school accounts “for now”. The help page is the more specific of the two.
The small print at the foot of the page is worth reading whole: “Check responses. Supervise closely, interrupt when needed. Subscription required. Compatibility and availability vary. 18+.”
An agent that runs while your laptop is off, with a vendor asking you to supervise closely, is a supervision problem you have to design for — not a feature you switch on and forget.
How it compares
