TL;DR — THE SHORT VERSION

Muse is Meta’s personal AI agent: it carries out tasks, not just answers. Meta launched it in the US on 8 September 2026, the same month as two rivals.

  • What it does: sends emails, books travel, fills out forms and negotiates, according to Meta.
  • How it is controlled: a separate Sentinel agent must approve anything Muse sends to the internet.
  • Where: the US, on iOS, Android and muse.ai; a Mac app followed on 17 September 2026.Meta, Muse download page, read at source 22 Sep 2026: “Muse for Mac OS, right on your desktop computer.” Date from Mark Zuckerberg’s Threads post, 17 Sep 2026: “Muse for Mac is out today!”
  • Cost: free with a usage limit; paid plans are $20 and $100 a month, in limited testing, according to Meta.Meta Help Center, About Muse subscriptions, read at source 22 Sep 2026: “Power plan ($20/month)” and “Maximum plan ($100/month)”. Until 22 Sep 2026 this line gave no prices.
  • Not Microsoft’s Muse, which is a 2025 model for video games.

What is Meta Muse?

A personal AI agent from Meta. Meta’s launch post puts it plainly: “Muse is a personal AI agent. It doesn’t just answer questions, it actually does the work.” It is powered by Muse Spark, which Meta calls its “most capable model to date”.Read at source 16 Sep 2026: Meta, Introducing Muse, 8 Sep 2026.

Meta’s own examples: it “can handle tasks, like sending an email or booking travel”, and it “can open a browser, fill out forms, and negotiate on their behalf” — which is the pattern covered on letting an AI browse for you.Read at source 16 Sep 2026: Meta, 8 Sep 2026.

TAKEAWAY

An agent acts; a chatbot answers. That difference is why the safety design below matters more than it would for a chat app.

How does Meta say Muse is kept in check?

With a second agent called the Sentinel, and by asking you first. Meta says Muse runs on “Muse Secure VM, a dedicated, virtual machine (VM) that houses both the agent and a person’s data”. It goes on: “A separate Sentinel agent runs on that same machine, kept apart from Muse at the system level. Nothing Muse does reaches the internet unless the Sentinel approves it, and it asks the person for permission when needed.”Read at source 16 Sep 2026: Meta, 8 Sep 2026.

Meta also says “Muse checks with the person before sensitive actions like sending an email or making a purchase”, and that it shows “a complete audit trail of everything it has done and plans to do”.Read at source 16 Sep 2026: Meta, 8 Sep 2026.

The order of events, as Meta describes it:

  1. You give Muse a task.
  2. Muse works on its own virtual machine, where your connected accounts are stored.
  3. The Sentinel checks anything headed for the internet.
  4. You approve sensitive actions, such as sending an email or making a purchase.

This is Meta’s description, not a test. No independent test of the Sentinel was available for this page, so how well it works in daily use is unverified.

Meta puts a gate between the agent and the internet. Whether that gate holds up is still to be shown by independent testing.

Who can use Muse, and what does it cost?

People in the US, free for most tasks. Meta: “Muse is rolling out in the US on iOS, Android, and muse.ai, and coming soon to AI glasses. It’s free for most of what people need, with subscription plans for people who want to do more.” The launch post gave no subscription prices.Read at source 16 Sep 2026: Meta, 8 Sep 2026.

The prices are now on Meta’s Help Center. Two paid plans, each a weekly allowance: “Power plan ($20/month) 500M Muse tokens per week” and “Maximum plan ($100/month) 3B Muse tokens per week”. Meta adds that “Muse and Muse subscriptions are in limited testing and aren’t available in all locations yet”, and that “You must be 18 or the age of majority in your country to subscribe.” Prices change; re-check before paying.Meta Help Center, About Muse subscriptions, read at source 22 Sep 2026: “Muse and Muse subscriptions are in limited testing and aren’t available in all locations yet”. Until 22 Sep 2026 this section said only that the launch post gave no subscription prices.

A Mac app arrived on 17 September 2026. Meta’s download page offers “Muse for Mac OS, right on your desktop computer”, and Mark Zuckerberg posted that day: “Muse for Mac is out today!” To work on your computer it asks for macOS permissions, including “Full Disk Access, so your agent can find, read or update files”.Meta, Muse download page, read at source 22 Sep 2026 · Mark Zuckerberg, Threads post, 17 Sep 2026, read 22 Sep 2026 · Meta Help Center, help article on Muse for Mac, read at source 22 Sep 2026: “you’ll be asked to grant Muse permissions that are set and controlled by macOS, not by Meta”.

TAKEAWAY

Meta’s launch post names the US only. AI glasses are listed as coming soon, with no date.

Is Meta Muse the same as Microsoft Muse?

No. Microsoft Research published a different Muse on 19 February 2025: “a generative AI model of a video game that can generate game visuals, controller actions, or both”. It is a World and Human Action Model, trained on the Xbox game Bleeding Edge.Read at source 16 Sep 2026: Microsoft Research, 19 Feb 2025.

More AI names that point to more than one product: Muse, Grok Bot, AI Studio: Which Product Do You Mean?

TAKEAWAY

Different company, different job. Microsoft’s Muse generates game visuals; Meta’s Muse carries out tasks for people.

Is Muse open source?

The model behind the agent is not. Of Muse Spark, Meta says only that it hopes “to open-source future versions of the model”. Meta did release a different model, Muse Glimmer, on 10 August 2026, “open sourcing the model weights under a permissive Apache 2.0 license”. Glimmer is “a 30-billion-parameter model”; the Muse agent runs on Muse Spark.Read at source 16 Sep 2026: Meta, 8 Apr 2026; Meta, 10 Aug 2026.

TAKEAWAY

Muse Spark’s weights are not released; Muse Glimmer’s are. Glimmer is a separate model, not the one that runs the agent.
