Eight Google, Meta and xAI names changed in 2026. Search with the new name, and check the company’s own page before trusting an older tutorial.
- Vertex AI is now Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform.
- NotebookLM is now Gemini Notebook.
- Imagen 4 is shut down. Google names Nano Banana 2 as the replacement.
- Gemini CLI stopped for Google AI Pro, Ultra and free individual users. Google points them to Antigravity CLI.
- xAI is now owned by SpaceX.

Check the date on any tutorial. Anything written before the dates above may use a name that no longer points where it did.
What happened to Vertex AI?
It became Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform. Google Cloud announced the change on 23 April 2026, and its product page is now titled “Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform (formerly Vertex AI)”. In Google’s words, “all Vertex AI services and roadmap evolutions will be delivered exclusively through the Agent Platform”.Read at source 16 Sep 2026: Google Cloud blog, 23 Apr 2026; Google Cloud product page.
Neither page said whether existing Vertex AI code keeps working unchanged. One later change does touch code: on 18 September 2026 Google’s release notes marked as Breaking version 2.0.1 of the Agent Platform SDK for Python (google-cloud-agentplatform), which “decouples the agent surface from google-cloud-aiplatform into a dedicated package”.Google Cloud, Agent Platform release notes, 18 Sep 2026, read in a browser 22 Sep 2026. Test your own setup rather than assume either way.
Search for the new name. Guides written before April 2026 still say Vertex AI, and may describe screens that have since moved.
What happened to NotebookLM?
It is now called Gemini Notebook. Google announced on 16 July 2026: “We’re renaming NotebookLM to Gemini Notebook.” Google calls it “the same standalone product”, and says every notebook is getting “a secure cloud computer” so it can “write and execute code natively”.Read at source 16 Sep 2026: Google, 16 Jul 2026.
Same product, new name. Google describes a rename with new features added, not a replacement.
What happened to Gemini CLI?
It stopped for most individual users on 18 June 2026. Google wrote that Gemini CLI and Gemini Code Assist IDE extensions “will stop serving requests for Google AI Pro and Ultra, as well as those using it free of charge using Gemini Code Assist for individuals”. Google’s replacement is Antigravity CLI. Organisations on a Gemini Code Assist Standard or Enterprise licence were told “your access remains unchanged”.Read at source 16 Sep 2026: Google for Developers, 19 May 2026.
Check your plan first. Standard and Enterprise licences kept Gemini CLI; Google AI Pro, Ultra and free individual users were pointed to Antigravity CLI.
Is Imagen gone?
Imagen 4 is. Google’s deprecations page lists all three Imagen 4 models with a shutdown date of 17 August 2026, and names gemini-3.1-flash-image as the replacement. Re-test old image prompts. Nano Banana 2 is a different model, so prompts tuned for Imagen 4 may not behave the same way.
What happened to Whisk and ImageFX?
They moved into Flow. On 25 February 2026 Google wrote that “the best capabilities from our image generation experiments — Whisk and ImageFX — are moving directly into Flow”. Look for old work in Flow. Google said users could opt in to transfer Whisk and ImageFX projects from March 2026.
Which Veo versions still work?
Veo 3.1 is current; Veo 2 and Veo 3.0 are shut down in the Gemini API. Google’s deprecations page lists veo-2.0-generate-001, veo-3.0-generate-001 and veo-3.0-fast-generate-001 with a shutdown date of 30 June 2026. The Veo documentation lists Veo 3.1 as a preview and describes it as “a model for generating 8-second videos (720p, 1080p, or 4k) with natively generated audio”.Read at source 16 Sep 2026: Google, Gemini API deprecations and Veo documentation.
Update model IDs in old code. Requests naming the Veo 2 or Veo 3.0 IDs above point at models Google lists as shut down.
Is Llama gone?
Not confirmed, but its website now points elsewhere. On 16 September 2026 llama.com returned a permanent redirect to developer.meta.com/ai. By 22 September 2026 that address itself redirected on to dev.meta.ai. Meta’s newest models are called Muse. Muse Spark was introduced on 8 April 2026, and Meta calls it its “most capable model to date”. None of the Meta pages read for this tracker says Llama is discontinued, so this page does not say so either.
Meta’s new work is under the Muse name. Treat Llama tutorials as older material, and check Meta’s developer site for what is current.
Who owns xAI now?
SpaceX. xAI’s own announcement of 2 February 2026 reads: “SpaceX announced today that it has acquired xAI.” The footer of x.ai now reads “© 2026 SpaceXAI LLC”.Read at source 16 Sep 2026: xAI, 2 Feb 2026.
The company changed hands; the product is still Grok. Guides that call xAI independent are out of date on ownership, not on the product name.
How to check a product name yourself
- Open the company’s own deprecations page or changelog. Google publishes both for the Gemini API.
- Type the old web address. A permanent redirect to a new address is a strong sign the product moved.
- Read the product page title. Google’s page for Vertex AI’s successor still says “formerly Vertex AI” in its title.
- Check the date on the guide you are following. Compare it with the dates in the tracker above.
A company’s own page beats a roundup. This site caught two of these changes late by trusting secondary sources, and corrected both in place.
